Sample Kit #2: pocketty
Unsolicited sample, not an endorsement. Ship Plainly made this as a portfolio example from public information only. The maker hasn't seen, asked for, or approved it, and isn't affiliated with us. Facts are from the sources below as read Oct 17, 2026 (~11:30 AM CDT).
Sources (public)
- Show HN post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50009634 ("Show HN: Pocketty – iPhone SSH terminal that pings you when an agent is blocked", posted Oct 8, 2026, 1:11 PM CDT. 32 points / 17 comments at time of reading)
- Site: https://pocketty.app/
What the public pages say:
- An SSH terminal for iPhone and iPad, "made for herdr", which keeps agent panes alive and knows when each one is working, needs you, or done.
- Notifications are sealed on your computer with HPKE (X25519, ChaCha20-Poly1305), and a stateless Cloudflare Workers relay forwards them to APNs.
- SSH keys live in the Secure Enclave. It has per-turn diffs, a file browser, and localhost previews.
- No account and no analytics.
- 14-day free trial, then a one-time purchase: $99 at launch, rising to $129 (site: "It goes up to $129 later").
- The site compares itself to Moshi in a detailed table.
- The maker built it during paternity leave ("nap traps").
What the HN thread raised (paraphrased):
- One user hit "herdr is not installed on this host" and asked, "What exactly should I pay 99 for?"
- Another pointed to a free, self-hosted alternative, herdr-web-ui.
- Others asked about iCloud Keychain key sync and how the app tells "thinking" from "blocked".
- Someone asked for trial-to-paid conversion numbers.
1. Teardown
Working:
- A sharp, specific hook ("pings you when an agent is blocked").
- A great human story (nap traps).
- An honest comparison table with "facts checked on" dates. That's exactly the plain, sourced style we like.
What we'd change:
- Answer "$99 for what?" in one line above the fold. The value is spread across eight sections. Lead with the outcome: "Leave your desk. Your agents still reach you, and nobody else can read the alert."
- Lead with the paternity-leave story on launch day. It's in the HN post but not on the site. People remember a story longer than a feature list.
- Make the herdr dependency clear before people install. The first bug report was a herdr detection issue. A "Works with herdr X.Y+ / without herdr you get plain SSH" line plus a troubleshooting link would head that off.
- Have a short, kind answer ready for "free alternative exists." Differentiate on sealed notifications and the native Pane view. Don't knock the free project.
- The price change is a deadline. Use it calmly. "Launch price $99 until [date], then $129" (only with a real date).
2. Positioning brief
- For: developers who run Claude Code/Codex/OpenCode-style agents in terminals and step away from the desk
- Problem in their words: "My agent sat blocked for 40 minutes waiting for a 'yes' while I was making lunch." (illustrative phrasing, not a quote)
- Replaces: checking the laptop constantly, generic SSH apps, or notification tools that send prompt text to a third-party server
- Promise: Know the moment an agent needs you and answer from your phone. Only your phone can read the alert.
- Proof points (public): HPKE-sealed alerts; Secure Enclave keys; no account/no analytics; works with plain SSH too
- Objections: price vs. free tools; herdr setup; iOS-only (no Android yet, per site FAQ)
3. Product Hunt set
Taglines (≤60):
Your coding agents, in your pocket(34)Get pinged when your AI agent is blocked, then answer it(56)An iPhone terminal that tells you when agents need you(54)
Description (≤500):
pocketty is an SSH terminal for iPhone and iPad, made for herdr. When a coding agent is blocked or done, your computer seals the alert so only your phone can read it. Tap it, Face ID, and you're in that exact pane with real keys, per-turn diffs, files, and localhost previews. No account, no analytics. It also works as a plain SSH client. 14-day free trial, then a one-time purchase.

Maker first comment: outline (rewrite in your own words):
- Paternity leave + nap traps → why it exists
- The one thing it does better: sealed alerts, with a 2-sentence plain-English explanation
- What you need: herdr (optional), Tailscale (recommended)
- What it isn't: no Android yet; fewer features than Moshi on purpose
- Ask: "What do you want to approve from your phone that you can't today?"
Likely questions + answer points: Free alternatives? → sealed alerts + native Pane view; respect the alternative. Android? → not yet (site FAQ). iCloud key sync? → Secure Enclave trade-off. Thinking vs. blocked? → herdr's state model.
4. X launch thread
- I spent the second half of paternity leave building an iPhone terminal that pings me when my coding agent is stuck. It's out today. 🧵 [screen recording: notification → Face ID → pane]
- The problem: agents block on a "yes" while you're away. You come back, and nothing happened for an hour.
- pocketty watches herdr. When an agent needs you, your computer seals the alert with your phone's key. Our relay can't read it and keeps nothing.
- Tap → Face ID → you're in that exact pane over plain SSH. Real Esc/Ctrl/arrows. Swipe for the diff of that agent's last turn.
- No account. No analytics. Works with Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI and more (via herdr).
- 14 days free with everything. Then one payment, no subscription. → pocketty.app
- Built for my nap traps. What would you approve from your phone?
5. Reddit (2 posts)
A) r/ClaudeCode weekly showcase thread (not a standalone post). Per a mod post, simple project shares go in the weekly showcase thread and detailed write-ups use the "Built with Claude Code" flair (https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeCode/comments/1vdcl09/small_rclaudecode_cleanup_new_flairs_rules_filters/). We don't know whether pocketty was built with Claude Code, so don't claim it.
- Comment: "Made this for when Claude Code blocks on approval while I'm away. It's an iPhone SSH terminal that gets a sealed notification (only your phone can decrypt it) and opens the exact pane. 14-day free trial, then paid. Disclosure: it's mine. Happy to explain the HPKE relay setup."
B) r/SideProject (self-promo welcome per third-party summary; lead with the story: https://oneup.today/tools/reddit-self-promotion-checker/sideproject)
- Title:
I built an iPhone terminal during paternity leave so my AI agents could ping me during nap time - Body: the story (3 lines) → what it does (3 bullets) → what I learned launching on HN (the price question, herdr setup confusion) → link at the end.
6. Show HN (teardown of the actual post)
- The post text was excellent: technical, honest, and it had a price. Keep that.
- Add one line on herdr setup/troubleshooting. The first critical reply was an install-detection issue.
- Offer the deadline only if real: "$99 through [date]."
7. Hero rewrite
- Headline: Know the moment your agent needs you.
- Subhead: An SSH terminal for iPhone and iPad that gets a sealed alert when a coding agent is blocked, then opens that exact pane.
- CTA: Try it free for 14 days
- Bullets: Only your phone can read the alert · Real keys, diffs, and previews · No account, no tracking
8. Launch-day checklist
- [ ] herdr version/troubleshooting note on the site
- [ ] Real end date for the $99 price on the site and in the PH first comment
- [ ] 15-sec screen recording: notification → Face ID → approve
- [ ] Prepared, non-defensive answers for "free alternative" and "Android?"
- [ ] No upvote asks. Share the PH link with your own audience as "it's live", not "please upvote"
